Degrees and Certifications:
BA in Art & Education MA in Curriculum & Instruction
Hello, my name is Marla Sonksen and I am in my 9th year as the Rudy Art teacher and 13th year overall as an Art Educator having worked on the Western Slope of Colorado prior to arriving at Rudy. My previous career was as a Resident Director at various colleges & Universities in Iowa, Arkansas and here in Colorado helping teach and mentor college students.
I enjoy spending time outdoors going on mountain hikes, gardening in my yard, running races from 5k up to Marathons and photography. I also enjoy reading a good book, watching movies, baking, sewing and anything crafty & creative. I earned my Bachelors degree from Northwestern College in Iowa and my Masters Degree from Colorado Christian University here in Colorado. I enjoy sharing my love of art and the process of creating with my students and am thankful to be here at Rudy Elementary!
RUDY ART CLASS LEARNING....
Throughout this 2022-2023 school year, all Rudy Art students have been learning about a variety of people, subjects and techniques. Incorporated into many of the lessons & projects are the expected Colorado Elementary Art Standards as well as Cross-Curricular subjects such as Math, Reading and Writing. We also have been learning about the Elements of Art, the Principles of Design as well as how to ask questions about what we see not only in our own art but also in the world around us. What can we learn from the world around us....from the people we meet....how can we listen better....how can we show kindness???
Here is what we are working on this 3rd Quarter at Rudy...
Kindergarten: We are continuing to practice our cutting skills and learning about Emphasis & Pattern
1st Grade: Emphasis & Line are the focus in our Art projects this Quarter
2nd Grade: We are looking at Balance in our Art as well as Form and how we can create that using paper
3rd Grade: Our focus this Quarter is Contrast and Value
4th Grade: Emphasis & Line are what we are learning about in our projects
5th Grade: We are looking at how to create Movement and Unity in our Art projects this Quarter. We will also begin our 5th Grade Tradition of Ceiling Tiles. The students look forward to this project of painting ceiling tiles and begin asking about this at the beginning of every year!
These projects have and will be completed using materials such as: construction paper, watercolor paint, yarn, tempera paint, digital art, oil pastels, tempera paint sticks, cardboard, crayons, colored pencils, metallic markers, metallic crayons and markers!
In addition to all of many materials we have used, we have an amazing addition to Rudy which is a new Kiln provided by our wonderful and amazing PTA! Thank you Rudy PTA! We are in the process of obtaining the materials needed to produce some creative ceramic artwork by our Rudy students and look forward to getting our Ceramics Unit started.
